Overview

The course is partly based on Dobson’s Learn New Testament Greek, and moves at a comfortable pace for the group.  The foundations are covered in 10 sessions of one and a half hours each, after which you can choose whether or not to continue on toward intermediate level.

Format – Online (Zoom)

Continuing Greek & Further Greek

This is open to participants who have already progressed through the early stages, have a basic grasp of Greek grammar, or have learned Greek in the past but need refreshing.  The intermediate level puts more emphasis on reading the New Testament, and the grammatical learning continues in that context.

Learn Biblical Hebrew

Description

Have you ever wished you could understand the Bible in its original languages? You don’t need to be an expert linguist to learn some of the basics.

Biblical Hebrew takes you on a fascinating journey of learning to understand the language of the Old Testament – the Hebrew letters, vocabulary, and sentence structure. You’ll soon be ‘reading backwards’ from right to left, able to speak aloud, understand passages of Hebrew Scripture and encounter the joys and challenges of translation.

Example שְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ יְהוָ֥ה_׀ אֶחָֽד׃   ‘Hear, O Israel, Yahweh our God, Yahweh is one’ (Deut 6:4)

Hebrew Next Steps & Hebrew Reading Group

Continue to grow in your biblical Hebrew skills by joining the Hebrew Improvers Group. This is also facilitated by Phil King and based around a mixture of reading Hebrew texts and learning extra grammar from Dobson’s book.  A WhatsApp group provides learning support between sessions. Participants need to feel reasonably comfortable reading Hebrew script, and know the basic Hebrew verb forms (perfect, imperfect, vav-consecutive, imperative).

Facilitator
The course is taught by Phil King. He has a PhD focused on metaphors for distress in Classical Hebrew and has been teaching Hebrew since the early 2000s. Phil works for SIL International, as the International Coordinator for Translation Training and Development.
